In 380 CE, the Roman Empire made Christianity the state religion, outlawing the practice of all others. Did the pagan faiths outlawed by this edict ever mount successful or at least meaningful resistance to this decree? if not, why?

Why do the Huns seem to disappear into the annals of history following their sweep into the late western Roman empire? Why did they stay or come back at a later date to take a chunk of the dying empire for themselves like so many other groups?
