Ancient Greeks used cups made of amethyst because they thought it would prevent drunkenness. Ancient Egyptians doused women in horse saliva to improve libido. These obviously didn't work, so how did these beliefs (and those like them) develop? Wouldn't just looking at what happens disprove them?
