Why do different layers of the atmosphere appear as different colors when seen from space?

At sunrise this morning, the illuminated part of the waning gibbous moon "pointed" up away from the horizon, even though it was higher in the sky than the sun. What is happening here? Shouldn't it point directly at the sun?
