When I was a kid, Benjamin Franklin was a quintessential example of an inventor-scientist and diplomat, while Thomas Jefferson was also those things, but rarely or never used as an example, and conversely for being slave-owning Founding Fathers. Why?

How was citizenship in West and East Germany obtained, upon the formation of the countries? Why didn't Arthur Rudolf have some form of German citizenship at the time he renounced his US citizenship? Was it the same for others who emigrated at the end of WWII?
