Mammals evolved hair to help keep them warm. But why hair? How did life know that this combination of molecules would work to stave off the cold?

When I give my dog a new bone he immediately brings it to the corner of the room and tries to bury it against the wall. He then pushes imaginary "dirt" over it with his face. He's never been taught to bury by another dog. How can he possibly know how to do this?
