An Emperor or King's image on currency throughout history was used as a source of propaganda. Today we still have coins from many different rulers from different time periods. Was there ever confusion due to lack of communication at the far reaches of a domain that a former ruler was still in power?

I once heard a professor say that Native American seeing Settlers ships would be like us seeing a flying saucer (or some other form of advanced technology). Over time, what are some accounts of less advanced civilizations coming into contact with the technology of more advanced civilizations?
