I once saw an interview with a Hiroshima survivor who said he believed japan were running out of rice and basically beaten by 1945, the Americans only dropped the bombs to test them. Was that a common view in japan after the war?

Imagine a Mercian or Northumbrian (or basically any Saxon kingdom) king in around AD700-800, imagine a prominent English Lord in around AD1200-1300. Which man do you think would have more servants (or slaves) to attend them in their daily life?
