in 1800 did the rulers of japan believe they were adequately well defended for the eventuality of an external force attacking the home islands? If "yes" how well founded was that belief? If "no" why were they content for the system as is to endure for more than another half century?

You know how in a lot of scifi they have machines that can create 3D projections of objects that can be viewed from any angle (as opposed to a 2D projection that only allows one perspective). How far back does that concept go?

There’s a bit in alt-history story I like, where Stalin orders his scientist to make a nuke in the next 18 months. When he’s told it'll need to be at least 4 years he threatens to have them all "liquidated" in 18 months if they have no bomb by then. Is that kind of decision in character for him?
