in the 1030s Harald Hardrada (who fought over the English crown in 1066) was exiled from his Scandinavian homeland. He and hundreds of other vikings went east and eventually became mercenaries in the byzantine empire. Would he or any of his men have ever seen a city before going to Constantinople?

Theres a bit in Emperor (2012 film about occupation of japan)where Fumimaro Konoe implies that theres no difference between the Japanese & the British empires, Americans just see one because japan isn’t European. Is that really a viewpoint a prominent Japanese person would plausibly have in the 40s?

there's a scene in Boardwalk Empire where two characters enter a small town Diner and order spaghetti & meatballs. By the 1920s had Italian food become sufficiently normalised in America that you could expect to find something like spaghetti & meatballs in a back woods Diner?

to make beer you have to use crops that could have been used to make normal foods (barley for example can make bread). that being the case was there much/any objection (on either side) to allowing The brewing industry to continue during the world wars when food was rationed?
