I've been told that a major reason Spartacus lasted as long as he did was that Rome saw no honour in defeating slaves and so wouldn't field enough forces to defeat him. Is this true? Are there many/any other instances of wars being extended because one side was too embarrassed to fight properly?

Suppose you went into an American Hotel (a normal low rent one) in 1937 and then again in 1944. How much (if at all) do you think war would have effected the quality of the food in the hotel restaurant between the two?

In the 18th and 19th centuries London became huge because enclosure was pushing small farmer off their, something simliar happened to Rome only with slaves in place of new farming advancements. Did anyone at the time notice the comparison?
