If you were in a market place in Kyoto in 1769 and there many/any foreign goods that you wouldn't see being sold but would have if you went there 1569, as a result of one year and not the other being during the Sakoku?

suppose a role in a historical society was usually filled by people of a particular sex but people of another sex were allowed to assume that role if they really wanted to. When describing that society is it accurate to refer to that as a "gender role" if it was theoretically open to everyone?
