In 2015 I watched a documentary about the fall of saigon.They interviewed a lot of people who attempted to escape to the US via the embassy, these people seemed to have very idealized conceptions of life in the US. Would people in Vietnam have been aware the US was going through a recession in 1975?

My grandfather was once scolded by a teacher, for calling an overweight classmate "fatty". I recall the story because I didn't believe school teachers in back then (UK, 1940-45) normally cared about verbal bullying. Was I wrong about that, or was this man doing something unusual for the time?
