Did the Early-American cash crop economy (tobacco, cotton) need slavery to thrive? Would the amount and type of labor needed to run a full time cash crop plantation be possible with modern labor laws?

The great general Peter Carolus is often ridiculed for allowing his young Lieutenant Rufus Wincent to lead the assault against General Belus Benechik when victory seemed eminent, rather then allowing the famed Warlord Beastia Mode to finish the job. Was Carolus unwise to do this?
