In school I was told that Caliphal Cordoba was around 1 million people. Was this true? If so, where did all the buildings go, as today's Cordoba is much smaller?

It surprises me that after the independence of the American colonies, the British Empire was bigger and more powerful than before. Didn't the defeat in America cause a crisis? Didn't it damage the prestige of the Empire? Did Britain need to rebuild her position in the world or was it a small loss?

I've read that China's Paramount Leader Xi Jinping was harassed by a crowd when he was a kid (1960s) and his mother was one of the harassers. How come? Was she forced to do so or was she brainwashed? Was this kind of lunacy common in China during Xi's childhood time?
