How did courts work in Scotland? How did people enter into a court? Did the monarch basically put them up in the castle, for company, until they wore out their welcome?

I hear that occasionally, an American slave is able to purchase their freedom. In a chattel slavery system, how are slaves able to have any possessions, nevermind amass enough to purchase themselves?
