Societies before writing was invented: What do we know about their cultures, hierarchy and religion? Do we still have some of these practices?

In the current day, historians easily look back and see that lots of Roman emperors had very short reigns. Was there ever an emperor that didn't want to be the emperor, because they also realized this, but still had to take the responsibility?

How was the condition of the average peasants teeth during the dark ages and medieval times? Is it fair to assume that their teeth were in better condition than many people nowadays, because back then they didn't have many (if any at all) sugary foods that are bad for their teeth?

Is the concept of warfare as most of us imagine it something older than the written word? If so, do we know why they happened, considering we had plenty of (good) land and barely any politics, so barely any reason to participate in them?

Before evolution and what not was an accepted theory, how did people see the different dog breeds? Were they seen as one big group with different sub-races (like we do now), or did people think they were entirely different animals?

In the series The Witcher, we see people in the castle of Cintra committing mass suicide because they faced certain defeat. They even had an actual plan to do so, as they had poison ready to be distributed to their inhabitants. Did this happen, or was it planned to at any point throughout history?
