I just saw Medieval or Early Modern Paris City map, I was wondering why were there no walls beside the Rivers in the Medieval City of Paris and wondering what were the countermeasures the defenders did to prevent the besieger from using boats to get into the City?

In a lot of fields, the Romans were more advanced than in most history of medieval europe. But in the field of anything related to Naval and Maritime, were the Romans as advanced as middle age europe in that side?
