Given that we do lack some historical sources, especially as we go back in time, and that everyone has a bias and hence sources must be interpreted, do historians still strive for objectivity? If not, then how do we get as clear as possible a picture of the past?

This is for the Roman Moderators: I have an interest in reading through the historiography on Rome. Besides Mommsem, Gibbon, Duruy, Heather, and Brown, who else should I read? Is there an order in which I should do this?

History as a discipline is all about the interpretation of the facts and about arguments about the past. That being said, when reading a book or an article how can I tell what is fact and what is an interpretation? If there is a better way to frame this question please let me know!
