According to Wikipedia, Islam came to China when the Tang Emperor — at the behest Sa'd ibn abi Waqqas, the envoy for the third Caliph, Uthman — approved construction of a memorial mosque in Canton. Why this overt acceptance of Islam? It's hard to imagine any European nation doing that.
