In the movie 12 Years A Slave Benedict Cumberbatch's character allows his slave to play violin at an event off his plantation & earn money from it. The slave is told he could keep the money. Could that slave have any reasonable expectation of spending that money? And, if so, on what?

The British abolished slavery in their empire in 1838. Prior to that untold numbers of slaves were transported to the West Indies & elsewhere. Were any slaves shipped to less likely places like Canada?
