I'm seeking a letter written June 13, 1781 from Gen. Thomas Sumter to Gen. Nathanael Greene. Historian Lyman Draper transcribed this letter in the mid 1800s and said it belonged to "C. King of Jamaica L.I." I can't find any info on a C. King document collection. Full text below.

Why did 18th century soldiers wear pants that covered their shoes? I just saw a display on American and British uniforms and both had pants with buttoned cuffs that covered the shoes. Seems like they would get dirty and tattered very quickly.
