The USS Constitution just returned to Boston after its regular (~20 year) renovations. It hasn’t been ‘active’, but it’s over 200 years old. How long would wooden ships last in previous centuries? Was there ever a time when a ship might see 200 years of service?

With many days of the week in (at least Germanic) European languages rooted in paganism (Monday, Sunday, etc), we’re there ever any concerted efforts by the Catholic Church to root out these pagan influences and rename the days, and how did that go over? If not, do we know why they never tried?

It seems quite common that historical figures, particularly of the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries kept diaries. Was this really that widespread and why was this so normal?
