Where is an authoritative summarizing source for science these days? Is there an Economist-like magazine or trade journal that does a good job explain things to lay people?

Is there anyway to quantify science that is observed phenomena vs was is theoretical based on observation, and can we compare this ratio between say what we know of the planetary universe to what know of biological processes of the human body and figure out which area we know more vs the other?
