can anybody recommend a serious book about what it was like for regular German citizens during the rise of the Nazis, 1935-1939, before it was clear a major war ha started? especially interested in economical statistics and such.

Is there any reliable information on what levels of physical fitness and proficiency were excpected from an infantry soldier in early modern (say post-Napoleonic up to WW I) armies? Were there significant differences? Did the same standard apply to reserve formations as well?
