Where did France's Japanophilia's come from? Was all of Europe as interested in Japanese media at some point and then everyone else's tastes changed, or is the story of contemporary French Japonisme unique?

What do we know about Bronze Age Minoan, Mycenaean, etc. textile dyes? Historical reenactment people & old "ancient arms & armor" artists seem fond of red (helmet plumes, cloth backing for armor, etc.). Is this based on material or artistic evidence or just a convention?
