What's the origin story on Santa Claus, and how quickly did he become ubiquitous? How much impact did he have on the commercialization of Christmas, or was this just pushback on a christianized pagan celebration? Is Father Christmas the same or distinct?

People's personalities are not fully developed until they are around 25, if I understand the science correctly. Do we know if, 100 years ago, before the idea of the 'teenager' was as fully developed as it is today, when most people were married with kids at 25, this was also the case?
