I've read many of the decadent figures of the early Imperial age might have been more popular with the masses than we'd assume; whose opinions were the surviving scathing critiques (Caligula, Nero) reflecting- the ruling class, later generations, just the specific author? Can we tell?

The Star Spangled Banner, a poem set to the tune of an old British drinking song, became the US national anthem by an act of Congress in 1931. Where did the practice of adopting a "national" song come from? Were there any practical reasons for it? Did everybody adopt one at once?

Given that much of his legacy is looked upon as vile (Trail of Tears, killing of the National Bank over personal vendetta, establishing a tradition of cronyism unprecedented in the history of the republic to that point), why is Jackson still placing above average in the historians survey?
