I've spent the last few months reading about World War One and now I'm wondering if there are other ways that I can get "involved" in the anniversary. Will there be any significant commemorations I should know of? (I happen to live in SF, but am willing to travel.)

In August 1914, when all these thousands of men were doing these long force marches totaling 100+ miles, what happened to the guys who were overweight and couldn't keep up, or what happened if you needed to stop to take a poo or something? Was it a problem if you fell behind your unit?
