In Medieval Europe, to what extent did the people in power care about events at the more distant courts, those which they had no direct dealings with? How quickly would news of a king dying, a princess being born travel across Europe and would it even be of interest to anyone?

Losses of the Scharnhorst and Bismarck both resulted in the deaths of ca. 2,000 men. To what extent did such loss of life resonate in the German society? Since the Bismarck sank in a period when the average Hans, Günter, or Jürgen could be optimistic about the war's outcome, make it more painful?
