“Here I stop.” In July 1812 Napoleon seriously considered stopping and quartering his army at Vitebsk for the winter, and conquering Russia in 1813. Instead he pushed on to Moscow and disaster. Would the Russian war have played out differently if he had waited? Or was defeat inevitable anyway?

The US constitution specifies a minimum age for political office holders, such as requiring that the president be 35. Why were the framers concerned about youngsters rising to power but not the risk that someone would be too old?
