One of Russia's claims to "third Rome" was the marriage of Byzantine princess Sophia Palaiologina and Ivan III. Sultan Orhan I of the Ottoman Beylik also married a Byzantine princess, Theodora Kantakouzene in 1346. Why doesn't Orhan's marriage pop up more often in Roman succession historiography?
