Why are so many "normal" people and "moralists"/"moralizers" ( be they religious, secular, political , etc.) often so closed-minded and stupid/unintelligent? What does it take (cognitively) to have a truly "functional" mind that can accept reality, other viewpoints?

Is anyone here familiar with the concept of "DARVO" (Deny , Attack , Reverse Victim and Offender) ? If so, what are your thoughts on this behavior, and its use by both extremists and others (the left)? Ways to counter it?
