because I've been regular internet user from about age 11, something I always wonder when I read The State of the Art is how would a writer in 1989 go about researching what major world events would have have been in the news 12 years before?

Wonder how well Gurgeh would fare in a modern roguelike where you die 200 games before you win one. The guy's ego would probably get blown to shit by Shattered PD or Quasimorph. On a related note here's a documentary about a country that has something similar to Azad:
