TDIH August 6, 1848: Susie King Taylor, Union Nurse in the Civil War, was born. At only 14 years old, she became the first black teacher to openly educate African Americans in Georgia.

TDIH August 2, 1864: The Battle of Mobile Bay started. In the early fall of 1864, Admiral David Farragut’s fleet attacked one of the last open Confederate ports. After one of his ships hit a torpedo in the bay, Admiral Farragut famously said, “ Damn the Torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
