There are 2 rather popular "we avoided nuclear disaster via these few heroes" stories of Soviets - the 1983 officer who didn't launch a missile strike despite protocol, and the 3 men who prevented the thermal explosion at Chernobyl. Are there any stories from other countries?

In the middle ages (and later), countries West of what now is Germany and Italy were relatively unified, and countries East were also comparatively large. Was the "tessellation" of Germany a "fluke" of history, or can it be attributed to some specific conditions (geographic, economic, ...) ?

In the history of ancient China, the Warlord Era (1912 - 1928) is generally considered to have been a period of chaos and disorder owing to the political disunity of the region. Is this not a teleological conception of history which assumes that the ideal end-state for China is political unity?
