In World War 2, why did the Allies land on the beaches that were heavily fortified with pillboxes and machine gunners and whatnot? Surely there were some beaches in Europe that were not being defended by the Germans.

The Book of Acts tells about an earthquake that frees a group of prisoners. The jailor wakes and is prepared to commit suicide when Paul stops him. What would a punishment have been to a jailor who lost his prisoners? Is suicide warranted in this situation?

During the reign of Justinian I, population of Constantinople was 500,000, supported by Egyptian grain supplies. When Egypt was lost to the Islamic conquest, the population of the city plummeted to 50,000. Yet, it recovered to 500,000-800,000 in the 9th/10th century. How was the city supplied then?
