In World War 2, why did the Allies land on the beaches that were heavily fortified with pillboxes and machine gunners and whatnot? Surely there were some beaches in Europe that were not being defended by the Germans.

What was so different about the Byzantines in ~1050 AD from the Ottomans in ~1470? The former was in terminal decline while the latter was able to completely roll over its neighbors even though their territory was essentially the same size.
