If physical dependence in opioid-addicted people makes withdrawal syndrome so uncomfortable and difficult to handle, why aren't we just putting heroin addicts into coma for 2-3 weeks (like we do with patients with serious injury) until most of the symptoms are gone, and continue with psychotherapy?
