Oxygen is a 'free radical' that can cause cell damage via ionisation, increasing risk of types of cancer and other medical conditions. Were rates of these conditions were less/none pre-oxygen-catastrophe? And were they high when the atmospheric oxygen percentage was higher than it is now?
