How do various sea creatures know when they have swum as deep as is safe for them?

How do we know the surface temperature, chemical makeup, ages of rock formations, and other details of other planets? How can images and other data tell us these things? A lot of it seems like a stretch. How much of it is conjecture?

Would Earth be at all negatively impacted if someone were able to flip a switch and make all forms of pollution go away at the same time? Would it upset any delicate balances, etc., with such a quick change?
