If I stare at something bright or colorful for long enough, why do I still see that image even when I close my eyes or look away?

My eyes are light blue and I am extremely sensitive to light. My husbands eyes are dark brown and bright lights don't bother him at all. Does this have anything to do with our eye colors? Can eye color affect light sensitivity appreciably?
