To what degree did pagan and crypto-pagan traditions and beliefs still exist in late medieval western Europe?

It has occurred to me that despite having heard of biremes, triremes, etc. I have almost no knowledge of what other types of ships the ancient Greeks (particularly of the 7th to 4th centuries BCE) used not only in war but for trade, exploration, fishing and transportation.
