Can we accurately measure the death toll from COVID by simply comparing the death rate for the last few months to the death rate from previous years? Is that where the 120,000 figure comes from? If not, what are the problems with this approach?

Many years ago, I read that with the development of better "scrubbers," environmental scientists were coming around to the idea of burning trash, rather than just piling it in a landfill. But I haven't heard much about it since. Is that still that case? Is there a trend in that direction?
