We often hear nuclear bombs being described in terms of 'megatons' of TNT, but almost never in terms of conventional weapons. How big would a conventional bomb physically need to be to replicate the effects of a nuclear bomb?

How do I know if a published journal article I'm reading is credible vs. bunk? I'm asking this with social sciences in mind as they are so easily politicized, but of course this question applies to all science publications.
