How come the former British colonies of Canada, Australia, and the U.S. all use the dollar ($) when the UK uses the pound (£)?

Why is WW2 considered a victory for the allies when ultimately they failed to regain the right of self determination for Poland, the Czech Republic, and the rest of the eastern bloc? Seems more like a wash to me
