If there is no majority in the electoral college, the House of Representatives votes for the next president. Meanwhile the Senate elects the VP. Is there some rationale I'm missing? This seems pretty out of the blue.

There's an FAQ about why black pepper is the default spice on the Western table. But I just heard a podcast attributing this to Louis XIV, and it seems to be a widespread claim. Did Louis XIV standardize salt and pepper? If not what's the history of the claim?
