A "Peppercorn Rent" is one that is a token or symbolic amount. Are there records of rents that were literally "one peppercorn"? Was a peppercorn ever significantly valuable on its own, or was it always intended to be a token amount? And finally, why bother - why not just offer it rent-free?

In "A View from the Bridge", the characters describe southern Italy in the 1950s as being not only desperately poor with no work available, but also backward with horse-drawn taxis still the norm. Is this accurate, or were Arthur Miller's dockside sources exaggerating for the sake of effect?
