As debates over the EU continue in Britain, I spotted someone claiming that "uncontrolled immigration led to the fall of the Roman Empire" - with the presumed warning that the same fate would befall the EU. Is there any light AskHistorians can shed on this claim?

The Duke of Devonshire has his family seat at Chatsworth in Derbyshire and owns chunks of land all over Derbyshire and Yorkshire. But not in Devon. Were titles like "Duke of X" and "Count of Y" originally more firmly tied to a particular parcel of land, and when did that change?
