How is it that after so many years of being lost to the annals of history - are we able to read and write ancient languages like Cuneiform?

I was watching the “The Help” and there was a brief scene where a maid was talking about being left in a will- in the early 60s. Did this actually happen and did a maid have to agree to a will as though it was a contract?
