In modern politics we typically put liberalism in the center, a kind of socially conersvatuve capitalism on the right, social democracy on the left, with communism on the far left and fascism on the far right. Would this way of looking at politics been different in the 19th century and if so how?

Historians often say that modern, American Liberalism was first created during the New Deal, and that American Conservatism as we know it only started with Barry Goldwater in the 1960's If that is the case, what were the ideological differences between the political parties before then?
